University of Hawaii Cancer Center staff and Hawaii Skin Cancer Coalition members Dr. Terrilea Burnett and Dr. Kevin Cassel co-presented to 4th-year marine biology students of a University of Hawaii Senior Biology Class on October 20, 2022.

Dr. Burnett presented the skin cancer biology content and Dr. Cassel presented an overview of the studies reviewed by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) study on sunscreens, the risks of sun exposure, and modification of behaviors to protect humans. The Biology class instructor wanted the students to review and discuss the legislation and laws banning sunscreen ingredients in Hawaii and “the risks for developing skin cancer in humans while protecting the marine environment.”
